This site was created to tell the full story of Birmingham, Alabama — including its challenges with crime and funding, as well as the powerful community work, culture, and progress happening every day. It’s a space to inform, inspire, and invite action.

How high is the crime rate in the city?

Birmingham has experienced a significant increase in violent crimes. In 2024, the city recoreded 151 homicides, making it the deadliest year on record. This equald to approx. 77 homicides per 100,000 residents, placing Birmingham among the cities with the highest homicide rates in the United States.
